The eight stories in this volume are no haphazard collection of pieces written at different times over the years. Varied as they are in subject, mood and tempo —much as the movements of a symphony vary in these respects—they were written as a group. Ranging from stories of the uncanny and supernatural to stories of crime and horror—with midway, as it were, a brilliantly original satire on psychiatric treatment—they all have one thing in common; nothing is as straightforward as at first it seems— the surface is liable to crack. |
