Charlie Chan was created by Earl Derr Biggers.
A detective of the Honolulu Police, of Chinese descent, father of eleven children beginning with "No. 1 Son", chubby and charming Chan is a great hand with the apt aphorism ("The fool in a hurry drinks his tea with the fork") and was created with the laudable intention of providing some positive discrimination after many a year of wicked Chinese. He featured in only six novels, but all but one were filmed and there were many later cinema spin-offs in most of which Chan was played by a Swede, Warner Oland.
