He lived in the eleventh century and was the monk in charge of the herb garden in the abbey at Shrewsbury, a Welshman half at home, half not, among the Englishmen in this thriving border town. He was half at home, half not, too, among the religious brethren since, although he had an unshakeable vocation, earlier in life he had been a soldier and had wandered the world, not altogether innocently. This gave him understanding of a wide variety of human beings, which, coupled with keen observation and strong powers of deduction, made him a considerable detective long before any such had been thought of.
