The Inspector waited, this time with an irritated tightening of the Hps. For a minute the menacing official silence wrestled with the stubborn private silence. The official silence won. Peters spoke. 'It was safe enough, but rusting, see. It might have stopped being safe.' He waited a few seconds, but his obstinacy had lost strength. 'So I changed the struts.' 'How? With the balcony standing out like a shelf the struts would have to be strong.* 'Well, you can see, can't you?' Peters muttered. They looked up. The struts were bolted into the wall about two feet beneath the balcony. They came up at an angle and were screwed to the underside of the balcony at its edge. Leigh looked dissatisfied by his own observations and waited again for Peters to speak. |
