Known as Bony and created by Arthur Upfield. Found as a baby beneath a tree in Queensland, Australia, son of an Aborigine mother and a white father, he was taken to an orphanage where, seen by the matron trying to eat a biography of the great French emperor, he was given his names. He proved highly intelligent, graduated from Brisbane University and then joined the police. He owes his chief characteristic, his ability to read "the book of the bush" to one Tracker Leon, a half-caste employee of the Queensland Police encountered by his creator during years of wandering over Australia's wide spaces. Bony is tenacious and boastful, and charming. But his boast of never having been defeated
