C St John Sprigg, born 1907 to 1937, had two main series characters, Inspector Bernard Bray and Charles Venables. He also wrote under his real name of Christopher Caudwell, various journalistic endeavours, non-fiction etc. He became involved in Marxism in the mid 1930s and later went on to fight Franco in Spain where he lost his life at a machine gun post whilst covering his comrades retreat.
