The new legitimacy law was not fully understood by several of the actors in the drama and this presented unexpected complications. Ro^er and Blossom put in some strenuous work— aided unexpectedly by the woodlore of Keeper Sturrock; but the main interest of the case lay in the battle of wits between opposing counsel at Drumford Assizes. For even they were unable to predict the jury's verdict. There were some pleasant—and some unpleasant—actors in the drama; but they all had one thing in common— none of them were overfond of Sir Jesse dc Vrykin, Baronet and almost feudal squire of Much Bellingham. |
