John Devoncourt was shot as he was fishing the salmon river near Craigalloch House. Among the house party was his cousin, who had the motive of inheriting from him and whose finger-marks were found on a pistol discovered near the body; however, time and the lie of the land gave him an alibi on which he was acquitted. Other fellow-guests were on the hills, walking or stalking, but none of them could be taxed with the crime, Boscobell,ex-inspector of Scotland Yard, called in originally for the cousin, solved the mystery, and we shall drop no hint of the real surprise which the solution provides. |
