AFTER THE STANDLEY CASE WAS OVER AND AL-most forgotten, I decided that I wanted to get away on my own for a while, I had no special destination in mind when I started out. I was just going to let the car have its head and find out where it would take me. When I left the office it was my intention to be away two, maybe three weeks, certainly no more. The length of my vacation, however, spread itself until I finished up spending an additional two weeks in Mexico. I came back during the last week in July and walked into a heat-wave. It was so hot that people were walking about in a semi-naked condition, and those who could spare the time never ventured very far away from the ocean. One reporter in .the local gossip column wanted the world to know that he had fried an egg on the sidewalk. It might have been possible, but I wouldn't have taken any bets. |
