Paul Doherty
The Medieval or historical mystery genre has never been more
popular, or indeed, better catered for. Numerous authors have
jumped on the bandwagon with varying degrees of success. Without
doubt one of the best is PC Doherty who captures the mood of the
time perfectly, helped in no small part by the social history
included throughout his work. This is perfectly judged as it
provides excellent factual information on the times without
becoming laborious or losing sight of the fictional plotting
aspects. Another bonus for the Doherty enthusiast is the
author prodigious output, writing almost seventy books in less
than twenty years under several pseudonyms.
We have an accurate
bibliography to the left and clicking on any titles hyperlinked

Series Characters
Hugh Corbett - Ranulf
Probably the authors most popular and well known character. He
was the King's Clerk and also master spy, detective and problem
solver. Corbett is ably assisted by his servant and bodyguard
Ranulf, a former convicted criminal whom Sir Hugh (as he later
became) saved from the gallows. The characters grow in stature
and depth as the series extends. |
Paul Harding - Series Character
Brother Athelstan
The Athelstan character first appeared under the authors
pseudonym for the first seven novels. Once again a well rounded
character whose adventures began in 1377. Many of the stories
are based on actual crimes and mysteries recorded at the time
with only some of the characters changed to fit the plot line.
This, combined with the authors trademark historical input,
makes them a fascinating read.

CL Grace - Series Character
Kathryn Swinbrook
Swinbrook is a physician based in Canterbury and again another
promising well rounded character. The greatest mystery
surrounding these books is their US only publication, bar the first title. As with
all the authors other work the characters all have depth and
interest and the stories well plotted and steeped in atmosphere.
She has an absent, possibly dead, husband though she is assisted
by the Irish soldier of the Crown Colum Murtagh and other
members of her household. Once again a highly recommended series
that deserves a wider audience.

Michael Clynes - Series Character
Sir Roger Shallot
The memoirs
of Roger Shallot lend a slightly more comic element to the
Doherty canon. All the usual ingredients are there but the
character is an outrageous braggart and the reader is left
wondering just how many of his anecdotes, which are liberally
sprinkled through the story, are actually true. There can be no
doubt though that William Shakespeare would not be who he is
today without the invaluable contributions (disgracefully never
credited) of Sir Roger Shallot ! |
