A rich and ailing old man, with deserving though expectant relatives—a nurse who ensnares the invalid's affections and looks like disappointing some great expectations—a dose of poison and sudden death— such is the theme of E. C. R. Lorac's new novel, and it is a theme played with fascinating and original variations. As Chief I nspector Macdonald remarks, it seems a homely, old-fashioned crime, quite simple if you only look at it in the right way, but nevertheless he comes as near to being completely baffled as he has ever been, which makes the ingenious solution doubly satisfying. |
