Jacques Futrelle, born in America on 9th April 1875, was one of the most formative writers of the genre. The Problem of Cell 13, first serialised in a newspaper before appearing in The Thinking Machine, was one of the most popular and influential short stories in mystery fiction history. His series character was Professor SFX Van Dusen aka The Thinking Machine. Futrelle died on the Titanic on 15th April 1912.
