Inspector Cockrill was created by Christianna Brand.
A little man (several inches too short to be a British police officer, except when the gangling Alastair Sim is playing him in that perennial thriller movie, Green for Danger), Cockie might well be called The Case of the Vari-coloured Hair, sometimes white, sometimes grey. Yet he is always himself, chirpy, apt to be waspish, a great picker and stealerof miscellaneous hats, but no fool. He was somewhat disadvantaged by having been created an officer of the Kent police and thus in principle confined to that county. But his begetter was well capable of creating a whole fictional island, San Juan el Pirata, on which he could be involved in murder while holidaying. And he believes in the truth of things.
