Things are not going well at Lovejoy Antiques Inc., home of the world's scruffiest but brilliant diwy, antique dealer Lovejoy. Making love with a lady in a forest is one way Lovejoy can get close to her precious collection of Bilston enamels, but ownership is a different matter. Worse still, Lovejoy's contacts are also having a hard time of it; so hard in fact that one of them turns up dead in the local boating pond. Lovejoy knows that Tryer's death is connected with the dying village of Fenstone and resolves to investigate. But as usual, nothing is straightforward: as well as turning sleuth, Lovejoy is forced by the Town Magistrate to join a Cause - the furtherance of a Pretender's claim to America-and somehow he finds himself as the Cause's fund raiser. Normally, Lovejoy only cares about finding enough antiques, women and food to last him through the day, but now he sets out to hold an illegal auction to raise cash: sifting through East Anglia's countless fakes, he mounts a large exhibition which he hopes will be a huge success and, more pertinently, will force the killer to reveal his hand.
