Carmen dyes her hair bright black so I have mine bleached to a pretty ghastly blonde which makes my lips look blue. Sometimes I see George looking at me in something like surprise; he can't believe that I'm not still beautiful; I find my own efforts to retain that beauty rather pathetic: the blonde hair and the boyish fawn corduroy suit with tapered pants. It is not really an effort to keep up with Carmen, it's an attempt to be something different. In my own mind I'm a kind of shy woodland creature, everything that is the exact opposite of Carmen.
