On a December day, when the sky is heavy with snow, a fashionable wedding is taking place at a village church. The bride and bridegroom have both been married before. John Scoon, heir to a baronetcy, has lost his wife a year ago; Eva's husband, Charlie Paull, has died two years earlier by falling—so it is said—from the suspension bridge which he himself designed. Later, in the snowbound mansion where the newly wedded pair, their relations and certain of their guests are forced to spend the night, another death occurs —a death, preceded by the explosion of a miniature rocket imported by Mr. Majendie, a pyrotechnician. |
