Jacket design by C. Leslie

A hotel on the hill country above Penang— a sudden storm—a Chinese room-boy making his way through the darkness and rain to the bungalow of the actress from Australia— and his horrified discovery of the "mem" in her friend's room—strangled. Which one of the well-bred agreeable travellers at the hotel could have murdered Katharine Lowell? Henry Pennington, the successful middle-aged Englishman, takes charge of affairs. The women are brought from their bungalows to sleep in the main building while the men make a guard around the hotel.
