Dorothy L Sayers created former Sergeant Bunter He was in Lord Peter Wimsey's company in the Army in France during the 1914-18 War and afterwards became his servant, making himself, too, an expert forensic photographer. He is the epitome of 1920s manservantness, even to speaking on the telephone with "that throttled stridency peculiar to well-trained persons" and to greeting the grisliest crimes with the expression "very gratifying". He was meticulous as a valet. Lord Peter's dress-shirts were always in the second drawer of the wardrobe, his silk socks in the tray on the right-hand side and the dress-ties just above them.
