In the intervals between his more complicated cases Mr. Albert Campion, the celebrated Universal Uncle and Young Man Come About The Trouble, has had many shorter but none the less interesting adventures. Nine of these have been selected from his case-book and are here presented for the first time in collected lorm. They show him in his earlier light-hearted mood which the friends of his youth will remember and include the remarkable story of the old man in the window, the history of the vicious widow, the peculiar business of the onyx hat, and the monstrous affair of the Frenchman's gloves. Admirers of Miss Aillngham's more sober manner will welcome the collection of mysteries which form the second part of this volume. In "It Didn't Work Out," "Publicity," "They Never Get Caught," and "The Mistress In The House" the author's sensitive perception and uncanny gift for characterisation is perhaps better shown than in anything she has yet written. This is the first collection of Margery Allingham's short stories to be published in this country. |
